Formel 1 Monaco Qualifying Liveticker

Leclerc Takes Pole After Perez Crash

By BBC Sports Chief F1 Writer in Monaco

Qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix will begin at 4pm local time (2pm GMT) at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo. The three-part session will last approximately one hour, although it could be longer if there are any red flags or other stoppages.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session that saw Sergio Perez crash heavily at the end of Q3.

Perez lost control of his car at the Swimming Pool chicane and hit the barriers hard. The impact was so heavy that it broke the car in half and brought out the red flags. The session was stopped for over 30 minutes while the wreckage was cleared away.

When the session resumed, Verstappen was able to set a time that was good enough for pole. He was joined on the front row by Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who had a brilliant qualifying session. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start third, ahead of Carlos Sainz in the other Ferrari.

The top 10 was completed by Lando Norris (McLaren), George Russell (Mercedes), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).

The race will start at 2pm local time (12pm GMT) on Sunday. Verstappen will be the favourite to win, but Leclerc and Alonso will be hoping to challenge him for the victory.
