BASF Factory Explosion Leaves 18 Workers Injured

Incident Prompts Investigation, No Contamination Reported

LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany – July 29, 2024

An explosion and subsequent fire at the main plant of German chemical giant BASF on Tuesday left 18 workers slightly injured, the company said. The incident occurred in a southern section of the plant and has prompted an investigation.

BASF said in a statement that the explosion and fire were caused by a leak of an organic solvent. The company said that the fire was contained and extinguished, and that there were no reports of contamination in the area.

The injured workers were taken to local hospitals for treatment. BASF said that their injuries were minor and that they were expected to make a full recovery.

The incident is under investigation, and BASF said it was cooperating with authorities. The company said it would release more information as it becomes available.
